Local Dorothy Sutton Performance Festival

We will be having a Dorothy Sutton Honors Recital held on Sunday, October 29, 2023 for those who do not want to travel to the State Showcase and qualified in our Preliminaries. More details TBD.

Preliminary Auditions

Nicholas Mynyk will lead the discussion on chamber music.

Stage 1 - Local

Please note that the wearing of masks due to Covid will be required for all attendees as per the venue’s instructions.

Local preliminary auditions. Students will perform 2 memorized pieces, preferably from 2 contrasting periods, for one judge. Time limit is 8 minutes total for both pieces.

WHEN: October 8, 2023 | 1PM - 5PM

WHERE: Wynnefield Settlement Music School

FEE: $40 by 09/16/22; $30 per ensemblist; $45 late registration by 09/24/22. All entry fees are non-refundable.

All teachers must be available to help with theory grading the day of the festival. If one cannot attend, please select the $100 substitution fee at time of registration. Parents may not substitute.

Local Award: All students will receive a ribbon of participation from PhMTA. Only students who receive a Superior rating on their performance and a minimum of 85% on the theory test up through level 5 may advance to the State level to play in the Showcase Recital. Students at level 6 or higher are encouraged to take the theory tests, but it is not mandatory if they scored 85% or higher on a previous level 5 test. To encourage test participation, students with a superior rating for these levels will still be accepted for the state festival if they score less than 85%.

Register and pay for your students HERE. Download the DSPF Rating sheet, print 1 for each student/ensemble, fill out the following fields: student name , instrument, title, and composer.

NOTE: Failure to list the participant’s theory level in the online registration form will result in the participant forfeiting their right to take the theory test.

Stage 2 - State

State level DSPF Showcase Recital where students meeting the requirements above will perform the piece selected by the judge at their adjudication.

WHERE: Indiana University of Pennsylvania

TIME: 8:00 a.m. until finished

REGISTRATION: Online by teacher HERE

FEES: Solos $13.00, Ensembles $20.00; All entry fees are non-refundable.

ONLINE REGISTRATION WINDOW: OCT. 10 - OCT. 23, 2023 @ 11:59 PM

Only teachers can enter students for online registration.

No checks will be accepted. Payment is online using Paypal or credit card. Teachers must attend and volunteer if their students are to receive a medal and certificate, or a $30 substitution fee must be included with the fees. Parents may not be substitutes. A $20 penalty fee will be invoked after the event to teachers failing to notify the state festival chair at least 48 hours in advance of the state event that their attendance status has changed.

Students must perform and be present to receive their medal and certificate.
