Lewis Baratz: How to Coach a Student Chamber Ensemble

A beginning student chamber ensemble consisting of a trio sonata texture: flute, violin, cello, and piano, will run through a beginning coaching session with Lewis Baratz. Lewis will give us the techniques, skills, and useful exercises needed to teach an inexperienced group the art of listening and phrasing interpretation to create a cohesive sound. This is for teachers that always wanted to start coaching ensembles, but may not be familiar with the idiosyncrasies of instruments other than keyboard.

Lewis Baratz is a harpsichordist, recorder player, and music historian. He has performed with Abendmusik, The Academy of Sacred Drama, Bethlehem Baroque, Biber Baroque, Brandywine Baroque, The Queens Consort, Voices Chorale, Vox Ama Deus, the Voyces Ensemble, and as artistic director of the period instrument ensemble La Fiocco. He was a Fellow of the Belgian American Educational Foundation and a Fulbright Scholar, and earned his Ph.D. in musicology/historical performance practice from Case Western Reserve University. Lewis was a visiting professor at Seton Hall University and adjunct associate professor of music history and theory at Mercer Community College. Currently at Lafayette College, Lewis is director of the chamber orchestra, and teaches harpsichord and recorder. He was radio host of the Well Tempered Baroque show at WWFMZ. He's had more than 20 publications on a wide range of music history topics, including performance of 15th-century dance music, 17th-century Roman keyboard music, biographical, archival, and manuscript studies, basso continuo, and the choirboys of the Brussels Collegiate Church of SS Michael and Gudula, ca. 1550 to 1793. Lewis is a board member for Early Music America.
